India is home to many languages, religions, cultures and traditions, yet a shared spirit of unity connects every Indian. National Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is observed every year on 31 October to celebrate that spirit of togetherness.

The day marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, popularly known as the Iron Man of India, whose leadership helped unite the country after Independence. In 2026, India marks his 151st birth anniversary.

History of National Unity Day

The Government of India introduced National Unity Day in 2014. 31 October was chosen to honour Sardar Patel, who was born on 31 October 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat.

As India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Patel led the integration of more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union after Independence in 1947. His determination and vision helped build a united and stronger India.

In his honour, the Statue of Unity, the world's tallest statue at 182 metres, was unveiled at Ekta Nagar (Kevadia), Gujarat, on National Unity Day in 2018.

Why is National Unity Day observed?

The day promotes national integration, peace and harmony among all Indians. It highlights five core values:

  • National integration: bringing people from different backgrounds together.
  • Unity in diversity: respecting India's many cultures, languages and traditions.
  • Peace and harmony: building understanding and cooperation between communities.
  • Strength of the nation: recognising the importance of protecting the country's unity and security.
  • Social responsibility: encouraging every citizen to contribute positively to society.

How is National Unity Day celebrated?

  1. 1Run for Unity: people across the country take part in unity runs and walks to spread the message of national integration.
  2. 2Unity Pledge: government employees, students and citizens pledge to uphold the unity, integrity and security of the nation.
  3. 3Educational programmes: schools and colleges hold speeches, essay competitions, debates, quizzes and poster-making contests.
  4. 4Cultural events: performances showcase India's diversity and shared heritage.
  5. 5Community activities: citizens join initiatives that encourage cooperation, mutual respect and social harmony.

Run for Unity: a reminder to stay active

The Run for Unity is also a reminder that a healthy nation starts with healthy families. The World Health Organization recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity every week, such as brisk walking. If you are joining a unity run or walk:

  • Start slowly and choose a pace that suits your fitness level
  • Drink water before and after walking or running
  • If you are older, or have a heart condition, diabetes or joint problems, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine
  • Stop and seek medical help if you feel chest pain, breathlessness or dizziness

The role of students and young people

Young people play an important role in building a united and progressive India. Students can take part in awareness programmes, respect different cultures, help others and share positive messages about national integration.

How can we promote unity every day?

Unity is not limited to one day. Every citizen can contribute through simple everyday actions:

  • Respect people from all cultures and communities
  • Avoid spreading rumours, discrimination and hatred
  • Choose peaceful communication and mutual understanding
  • Support equal opportunities for everyone
  • Take part in community development activities
  • Teach children the value of respect, cooperation and responsibility

Why unity matters in modern India

India's strength lies in its diversity and in the ability of its people to work together. Unity supports economic growth, social stability and peace. When citizens respect one another and work towards common goals, the whole country grows stronger.
