If your parents or grandparents are 70 or older, they're entitled to up to ₹5 lakh a year in free hospital treatment under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, regardless of income. As of 21 September 2026, over 1.36 crore senior citizens have the card. Many families still don't know about it.

Who is eligible?

  • Every Indian citizen aged 70 or above
  • No income limit
  • Families already covered under PM-JAY get an additional ₹5 lakh top-up just for the senior member
  • Those with private health insurance or ESI can also enrol
  • Those on CGHS, ECHS or CAPF must choose between their existing scheme and PM-JAY

What does it cover?

Cashless secondary and tertiary hospital care at empanelled public and private hospitals, including procedures like dialysis, stroke care, knee and hip replacement, angioplasty and pacemaker implantation.

Documents needed

Only the Aadhaar card, verified through e-KYC. If Aadhaar shows only the birth year, 1 January of the following year is taken as the date of birth.

How to apply online

  1. 1Download the Ayushman app or visit beneficiary.nha.gov.in
  2. 2Log in with your mobile number and OTP
  3. 3Enter the senior's Aadhaar and complete e-KYC
  4. 4Add mobile number, category and PIN code
  5. 5Download the card once approved

If both parents are 70+, use "Add Member" after enrolling the first one. You can also enrol at any empanelled hospital's Ayushman help desk.

The Vay Vandana card pays for treatment. ABHA keeps their medical history. Link both, and store their reports in MyMedicare under Family → Add parent, so any doctor can see their history in an emergency.
