Telangana has reported more than 3,000 dengue cases this season, and Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy are among the hardest-hit districts. By the end of September, the city's Government Fever Hospital was seeing over 600 fever patients a day. Most people recover fully, but knowing the warning signs can save a life.
Early symptoms of dengue
Symptoms usually appear 4–10 days after a mosquito bite:
- Sudden high fever
- Severe headache and pain behind the eyes
- Muscle, joint and bone pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Skin rash
Which test should you take?
- Days 1–5 of fever: NS1 antigen test (detects the virus early)
- After day 5: Dengue IgM/IgG antibody test
- Complete Blood Count (CBC): to track platelets and haematocrit, often repeated daily
Your doctor decides which test you need. Save every report in your MyMedicare account so the trend is visible at a glance.
Warning signs: go to hospital immediately
Danger often comes as the fever goes down (around days 3–7). Seek care right away if you notice:
- Severe stomach pain
- Persistent vomiting
- Bleeding gums, nosebleeds, or blood in vomit or stool
- Extreme tiredness, restlessness or confusion
- Fast breathing
- Cold, clammy skin
Do's and don'ts at home
Do: rest, drink plenty of fluids (ORS, coconut water, soups) and take paracetamol only as advised.
Don't: take ibuprofen, aspirin or other painkillers unless a doctor says so, as they can increase bleeding risk. Don't self-medicate with antibiotics.
Myth: "Low platelets always need a transfusion"
Most patients don't need platelet transfusion. Doctors decide based on bleeding and overall condition, not just the number.
Protect your home
- Empty standing water every week: coolers, flower pots, tyres, buckets
- Use mosquito nets and repellents, especially early morning and evening (dengue mosquitoes bite during the day)
- Wear full sleeves for children
